What causes cellulite and why almost every woman has it

· By the Not Cellulite team

If you have cellulite, you're like most women. It isn't a disease, and it doesn't mean you've let yourself go. Let's look at where that orange-peel look comes from and what helps.

What causes cellulite and why almost every woman has it

You're not alone

Almost every woman has cellulite. Even women who work out a lot and watch their weight. Men get it much less often.

Where it comes from

Under the skin there are small pockets of fat. Between them are tight fibres that hold the skin in place. When the fat pockets grow, they push outwards while the fibres pull the skin down. That's what makes the "orange peel".

It shows up mostly on the thighs, bottom and tummy. A lot of it runs in families: if your mum has noticeable cellulite, you probably will too. Hormones, extra weight and sitting a lot also play a part. So does age: over the years skin gets less firm.

It isn't a disease, and it doesn't mean you've let yourself go.

Does it need treating?

No. Cellulite doesn't harm your health. It's only about how your skin looks. Whether you do anything about it is entirely up to you.

What actually helps

What won't help: pills and supplements "for cellulite". Or liposuction: it isn't meant for cellulite.

To be honest, no method gets rid of cellulite for good. But your skin can get smoother if you look after it regularly.

How we work

At Not Cellulite we use the WellShape device. One handpiece massages the skin with vacuum and rollers and warms it at the same time. It feels like a warm, deep massage.

We don't promise "a dress size smaller in one go". We take measurements before and after, so you can see for yourself what changes.

At your first visit the therapist will tell you if the treatment suits you and how many sessions make sense.

Good to know

We don't do it if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, have a pacemaker or cancer, and in a few other cases. The therapist will go through this with you at the consultation.
